GULF OF MEXICO - July 1 is the official opening of scallop harvest season from the Mexico Beach canal east to Central Florida.

The prospects for St. Joseph Bay appear bountiful as researchers recently surveying the bay found nearly 10 times the scallops, on average, than a year ago. In fact the average count is among the highest since 1996.
