Going green with warning flags

NAVARRE BEACH, FL - The beach warning flags on Navarre Beach soon could go green.

Since 1997, Santa Rosa County has had a policy of never flying a green beach flag, even when conditions in the gulf were optimum for swimming. The reason was to encourage swimmers always to be cautious when going into the water.

County public information officer Joy Tsubooka said now that the warning flags are standard across the state and there is more education about what they mean, it is safer to fly the green flags.

Green flags are flown when conditions are calm in the water, but swimmers still are urged to use caution.

County commissioners will vote this week on whether to start using the green flags.
