Destin Shines! Silver Jubilee 2009
The City of Destin is turning 25 years old and will host an historic celebration. The week-long signature event, “Destin Shines! Silver Jubilee 2009,” will take place from Nov. 1-7. Events include:
•Nov. 1: Celebrate the residents with a picnic and concerts from 1 to 4 p.m. at Morgan Sports Complex. Bring lawn chairs or blankets. Sorry, no pets. BBQ lunch and cake provided. Residents bring side dishes or desserts to share.
Tug-of-war Contests, postponed from Blessing of the Fleet Week from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Concerts from 2 to 4 p.m. with 23rd Highlanders Bagpipes Band, Steven Ray Schmidt and Donnie Sundal.
•Nov. 2: Celebrate the leaders with a reception at 5 p.m. at Destin City Hall Annex, followed by photos at 5:34 p.m. and City Council meeting at 6 p.m. RSVP to Cheryl at 837-4242.
•Nov. 3: Luncheon at Destin United Methodist Church Life Center at 11:30 a.m. for city volunteers and partners. Deadline passed to RSVP.
•Nov. 4: Breakfast at Another Broken Egg at 7:30 a.m. to honor business owners. RSVP to Cheryl at 837-4242.
•Nov. 5: Celebrate the beaches with beach blessing service at 3 p.m. at June White Decker Beach Park. Beach cookout from 3 to 5 p.m. with Tai Chi demonstration at 4 p.m. Family movie, the 1984 Movie of the Year, begins at 5:30 p.m. on the green next to City Hall.
•Nov. 6: Celebrate seniors at youth at the Destin Community Center with senior activities, bingo, fun and food by Calhoun's Pub and Grub, from 12 to 3 p.m. A Teen Block Party will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Bring skateboards and helmets for open and competition skating times. Also, basketball, Madden Tournament, guitar hero competition, volleyball and more. Pizza Party features live music with Blood Stained Grace, Severance, Happy Times, Heritage and Without Silence.
•Nov. 7: Celebrate the harbor beginning with the City's Annual Pin Fish Tournament (Catch and Release) from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the docks behind AJ's. Free to all anglers under the age of 14. Bring your own pole and bait will be supplies. You must fish on the pier/dock behind AJ's Restaurant. Registration: 8:30 a.m. Start Time: 8:45 a.m. Awards: 9:45 a.m. First 50 participants receive a T-shirt. Boat rides, fishing demos and other water activities take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Capt. Royal Melvin Heritage Park located at 204 Harbor Blvd. between Dewey Destin Harborside and the Fisherman's Wharf Restaurant.
Sign up for cruising the bay on several Destin sightseeing boats, free, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.Reserve times now. Mention this is for Destin Shines! and call Southern Star, 837-7741; American Spirit, 837-1293, Miss Florida, 837-7095 and Little Nemo, 837-2404.
Meet the captains at a fish fry from 12 to 2 p.m. at The Capt. Royal Melvin Heritage Park. Lunch plates full of local fish and sides prepared by local experts. First come, first serve!
Dread Clampitt plays from 3 to 6 p.m. Bring lawn chairs or blankets, and the evening concludes with fireworks at 7 p.m. over the Destin harbor.
