Fill up, people-watch at Barefoot B-B-Q

Florida Freedom Newspapers

SEASIDE — Eating food prepared in a truck has become the new foodie craze, so I was interested to see just how good food could be coming from an Airstream on County Road 30-A.

About four converted Airstreams line 30-A just in front of Seaside’s town square. On a recent sunny Sunday afternoon, I visited Barefoot B-B-Q, which takes about two of the trailers.

The food

This is a regular barbecue joint, and more, packed into its small quarters.

From turkey legs and ribs to a portabella sandwich and tuna dip — you can eat your meal at large white picnic tables right in front of the trailers, or pick up a picnic package to-go.

I chose the pulled pork sandwich platter with a spinach salad and macaroni and cheese, and ate at a picnic table.

On the table were all of the accoutrements necessary for my meal.

Barefoot B-B-Q has four sauces: Hang Ten is a traditional sauce with a tomato base, brown sugar and bourbon; Wipeout has a vinegar base and is light, tarty and fruity; Pipeline has a mustard base and is sweet and spicy; while Hot Lava is spicy with a cayenne and pepper sauce.

My favorite sauce was the Pipeline. I kept dipping my giant sandwich into it.

The sandwich has a third-pound of pulled pork on Texas toast. The meat was very juicy and succulent. I spied someone manning the barbecue hidden behind the trailers.

The macaroni and cheese was good also. It was basically a gourmet version of Velveeta shells and cheese, except the shells were larger.

My salad was fresh and was not overloaded with dressing, which was pleasing. Other sides include baked beans, cole slaw and corn on cob.

Barefoot B-B-Q serves only hormone-free, antibiotic-free, steroid-free meat and poultry.

You can also get a drink at Barefoot B-B-Q, and they claim to serve the best Bloody Mary on 30-A.

If that isn’t your thing, they have an assortment of beers, daiquiris, wine and champagne.

The atmosphere

Barefoot B-B-Q and its neighboring Airstreams are definitely a place to see and be seen.

Since you sit outside along the road, people-watching becomes the natural appetizer as families bike and car cruise by.

The service

At Barefoot B-B-Q, its order at one window, get a number (on a foam flip-flop no less) and wait for one of the cooks to call your name over a giant megaphone where your food appears at the second window.

A final taste

I learned that it is indeed possible to have some really great food from a truck. I hope more of these mini-restaurants pop up along the coast.
