Snapping up the snapper (with CATCH-OF-THE-DAY PHOTOS)

Fish Flash

With only a few days left to catch red snapper, anglers are snapping up the snapper.

As a matter of fact, most everybody that fished Monday caught the limit (two per person) of the red signature fish, because the last day to keep a snapper is Friday, July 23.

One of those boats pulling their limit was Capt. Kirk Reynolds on the SS Enterprise. They brought in a limit of red snapper as well as a nice rack of king mackerel.

Anglers from St. Louis on the Top Gun with Capt. Randy Hanshaw had a limit of red snapper and a king mackerel on the racks.

Capt. Neil Finkel and his group aboard the Shock ‘n Ya’ll targeted the mackerel. They had a full rack of king mackerel from a four-hour trip.

Capt. Jimmy Miles and deckhand Pat Meyers on the Kelly Girl caught “all the law would allow,” when it came to red snapper Monday. In addition to the limit of snapper, they had a pair of king mackerel, a black snapper and an amberjack on the boards.

“Fishing is good,” said Capt. Miles, “Just nobody to take.”

Word is they also had a shark on line for a quite awhile on the Kelly Girls. The guy who was on the rod was complaining of a sore arm, and rightly so. Meyers said he fought the 200-plus pound bull shark for about 45 minutes. They got the shark to the boat, but not in the boat — which does happen.

Capt. Mike Knight on the Knight Rider went trolling for mackerel and managed to bring in a limit of king mackerel.

Arkansas anglers on the Silver Lining with Capt. Ed Shields brought in a fine catch. They had a limit of red snapper, a king mackerel and three bonito.

Anglers on a six-hour trip with Capt. Casey Weldon on the Fish-N-Fool reeled in a good catch of red grouper, red snapper and several amberine.

Don’t forget if you want to get in on the snapper, this is the week to do it.

See you at the docks.
