DESTIN — The Candymaker himself will tell you that the best breakfast in town can be found at his Scenic Highway 98 location in Destin, and serving the first meal of the day seems a natural.
“It is kind of unusual being that we are a candy store,” Tom Ehlke said, “but this was a restaurant.
“Nothing happens in the candy store in the morning, so I decided to serve breakfast,” he added. “I always thought there was room for a good old fashioned breakfast.”
So while he has established himself as a local and tourist destination, Ehlke expanded the shop offerings in December, appealing to people who like sweets but also enjoy country ham and biscuits, sausage and biscuits, pecan smoked bacon, eggs, grits or French toast.
The restaurant also boasts gourmet coffee service and fresh-squeezed orange juice mimosas.
“I have a machine that cuts and squeezes the oranges for the juice,” Ehlke said, noting that his customers can see the process.
He relies on his two local short order specialists for all the breakfast food preparations.
“And,” he added, “the food is consistently good. We check on it every day.”
