Sammy’s Pizzas & Subs serves fresh pies

At the very edge of Niceville, just west of the Mid-Bay Bridge, sits Sammy’s Pizzas & Subs, which has been serving fresh-baked pizza and sandwiches for about a year.

The food
This pizza lover was excited to try Sammy’s. I went on a Monday afternoon, and since it was between 2 and 4 p.m., the pizza was buy one get one free. It is every day.

I ordered a large meatball pie and a large pepperoni pie. I always order pepperoni wherever I go for consistency.
The gentleman working that day prepared my pies fresh, and they were ready in about 15 minutes.

The first thing I noticed was the crust. Sammy’s crust is thin and crispy, which is a plus for me. I’d rather not fill up on too much dough. The pepperoni pizza was perfect with the perfect ratio of cheese-pepperoni-sauce.

The meatball pie was the special of the day, which is why I chose that as my second pizza. The meatballs were not homemade, but overall that pie was good as well.

Sammy’s has a few specialty pizzas on their menu. They include the Sammy’s Big Meat (pepperoni, ham, sausage, beef and bacon), Pepperoni Extreme (pepperoni stack on pepperoni), Vegetarian (mushrooms, green peppers, black olives, red onions, tomatoes, spinach and feta cheese), Supreme (pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, onions, bell peppers and black olives), Margarita (tomato sauce, garlic, basil, tomatoes and feta cheese) Chicken Alfredo and Hawaiian.

They also have an assortment of salads, hot subs and cold subs on their menu. But what really seems to be their specialty item are the pretzel sandwiches.

These are served on homemade toasted pretzel bread. Combinations include The Original (ham, turkey and cheese with a side of honey mustard), The Club, The Chicken Club and the Twisted Turkey.
Sammy’s will dress your sandwich however you want, and you can make a meal deal by adding a drink and chips or a cookie.

Sammy’s also makes cheese bread and garlic bread.

The atmosphere
Sammy’s resembles a lot of pizza joints I’ve been to. When you walk in, you can see the pizza prep area where dough awaits.

You order at the counter and then can have a seat anywhere in the L-shaped dining area. I sat around the corner from the prep area where they had a TV playing the Disney Channel’s “Good Luck Charlie.”

Under that TV is an area with utensils and a fountain drink machine.

This is the type of place where it’s safe to pick up a pie after work, or bring in the whole T-ball team.

The service
As it was a slow time of day, there was one employee manning the counter when I visited. He was very knowledgeable about the menu and made my order quickly. I even asked him to box it to-go so I could bring leftovers home.

A final taste
Sammy’s fills the need for a casual, hometown pizza joint at the west end of Niceville. It’s convenient to those who live in Choctaw Beach as well.
