Softball: GC sweeps L.B. Wallace, win streak up to six

ANDALUSIA, Ala. — The Gulf Coast State softball team ran its winning streak to six games with a doubleheader sweep at L.B. Wallace on Tuesday.

Amanda Grimaldo was 3 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored and Sarah Steiner had two hits, including a home run, to pace a 14-hit attack in a 10-1 victory in the opener stopped after six innings by run rule. Taylor Nicolosi, Hilari Hopkins and Kat Vogler each had two hits each and combined to score five runs for GC (12-4), which plated seven runs in the top of the sixth. Ollivia McLemore had eight strikeouts and no walks and gave up three hits for the win.

Grimaldo was 4 for 4 with a double and a run in a 9-0 five-inning victory in the matinee. Nicolosi and Whitney Horton each doubled and the latter and Hopkins scored twice apiece. Steiner struck out three for the win and Natalie Walker finished up in the pitcher’s circle over the final two innings.

GC opens the home schedule Feb. 15 in a doubleheader against Faulkner State starting at 2 p.m. The team also will honor its late assistant coach Tim Cox during the doubleheader.
